MINNETONKA, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships with a 5-2 win over Minnesota State on Saturday in Minnetonka, Minn.
MSUM is now 9-7 overall. The Dragons will face top-seeded Augustana at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning in the semifinals. Minnesota State ended the season at 8-8.
Minnesota State won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches. The lone doubles win for MSUM came at the No. 3 slot, as senior
Morgan Smith and sophomore
Ricquel Ramsbottom teamed up for an 8-1 win over the Mankato tandem of Lisa Dobbelaere and Abby Schmidt.
The Dragons won the four singles matches that were completed. Junior
Jessamy Jones battled back from a one-set deficit to beat Melissa Mashburn, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore
Jade Goodyear-Anderson rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win over MSU's Erin Streeter at No. 2 singles, while Smith topped Sarah McCann, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot. Senior
Ashley Wood cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dobbeldare at No. 5 singles. Jones's match was the final one completed and clinched the win for MSUM.
"We got off to a little bit of a slower start in doubles with the exception of Morgan and Ricquel but I was always confident that our singles would pull us through," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "I was really proud of the team because we did even better than in our regular season-match with Mankato. Jade turned her result around completely. It was a great night for MSUM women's tennis."
Junior
Maria Moral Carretero was leading her match at No. 3 singles as was Ramsbottom at No. 6, but since the Dragons had secured a fifth team point, the match was completed.
