MINNETONKA, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team fell to top-seeded Augustana, 5-0 in the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships Sunday in Minnetonka, Minn.
MSUM ended the season with a 9-8 record while Augustana improved to 23-1. The Vikings have won five straight NSIC tournament titles.
Augustana won all three doubles matches, including 8-0 wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles. The closest doubles match was at No. 2 singles, where MSUM's
Maria Moral Carretero and
Jade Goodyear-Anderson fell to Sydney Postal and Berkley Darr by an 8-3 score.
The Vikings won the first two singles matches that were completed to clinch the win. Augie's Kornelia Staniszewska beat Dragon junior
Jessamy Jones, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Jessa Richards beat Goodyear-Anderson, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to clinch the win for Augustana. The remaining singles matches were unfinished as a result of the Vikings reaching the five points needed to win the match.
It was the final match for the two seniors on the Dragon roster,
Morgan Smith and
Ashley Wood. Both were four-year members of the Dragon squad.
