MOORHEAD, Minn. – For the second time this season, sophomore
Annika Greaney's late goal in the 84th minute was the gamewinner as the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a 2-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State University (2-3, 0-1 NSIC).
MSUM is now 2-2 overall, and 1-1 in NSIC play this season.
"It feels great to come out with a win after a tough game last weekend," MSUM head coach
Christie Chappell said. "We fought hard and played well today and the result showed."
The Dragons were the first to draw blood nearly midway through the first half. Senior captain
Jessica Johnson put the ball in the back of the net in the 20th minute off an assist from senior
Megan Selanders. Johnson is now tied with a team-high two goals this season.
SMSU outshot MSUM in the first half 5-3.
The Mustangs of SMSU came out in the second-half with a chip on their shoulder. SMSU outshot the Dragons 13 to two in the second half. Some great defensive plays, and some great saves by junior goalkeeper
Reagan VonBerge kept the Mustangs off the board until late in the second half.
Greaney scored the unassisted gamewinner in the 84th minute after a scramble in front of the SMSU net. The Mustang's Emily Huddleston scored a late goal for SMSU in the 89th minute.
VonBerge picked up the win after playing the entire match. She finished with seven saves and one goal allowed. Greaney led all Dragons with two shots, including two shots on goal. Johnson recorded one shot on goal, while sophomore
Ashley Coleman and Selanders each had one shot.
"I'm very pleased with the fight and persistence from my team today," VonBerge said.
MSUM continues its home stand on Sunday, Sept. 18 when it hosts the University of Sioux Falls in a NSIC matchup. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
