Dragon Women's Soccer Travels to UMD, Hosts St. Cloud State This Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team ventures on the road for the first time in 2016 when the Dragons play at Minnesota Duluth on Friday. Game time is 6 p.m. in Duluth, Minn. MSUM returns home on Sunday to face St. Cloud State at 1 p.m.

MSUM has played its first five games at home so far this season.

"We have been very fortunate to have been at home for such a long stretch of games but I think the team will enjoy the bonding that takes place on a road trip," MSUM head coach Christie Chappell said.

UMD leads the all-time series with MSUM 17-3-1, including a 1-0 win over the Dragons in 2015. St. Cloud State has won all but one meeting in the series; the Huskies beat MSUM 4-0 in St. Cloud last season.

The Dragons (2-3, 1-2 NSIC) split a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games on the road last weekend, beating Southwest Minnesota State 2-1 on Saturday before losing to Sioux Falls 1-0 on Sunday.

Senior Jessica Johnson and sophomore Annika Greaney share the team lead with two goal and four points apiece. Johnson leads in shots (15) and shots on goal (seven). Sophomore Jessica Dallman has three shots, all on goal. Jenson, Dallman and senior Megan Selanders each have an assist.

VonBerge leads the goalkeepers with 30 saves in four games and picked up her first collegiate victory in the contest against SMSU.  Freshman Kennedy Rodgers picked up the win against Black Hills State on Sept. 3 after playing in the second half and recording seven saves.

Christie Chappell is in her first season as MSUM's head coach.

About Minnesota Duluth
Minnesota Duluth is 2-2-2 overall 0-1-2 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs went 0-1-1 on the road last weekend, losing to Minnesota State 5-0 before tying Concordia-St. Paul 1-1. Four different Bulldogs have scored goal this season: Lizzy Fontes, Skye Finley, Destiny Schmitz and Emily Flewissner. Fonte and Erika Hjort have assists. Finley leads with 13 shots. Jordan Melby is 2-0-1 in goal with a 0.62 goals allowed average. She has 11 saves and one shutout. Sisley Ng has 15 saves for UMD and is 0-2-1. Greg Cane is in his 23rd season as the UMD head coach with a record of 235-141-38 at the school.

About St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State, which faces Northern State on the road on Friday prior to facing MSUM, enters the week at 2-2-2 overall and 1-0-2 in the NSIC.  On the Sept. 16-18 weekend SCSU went 1-0-1 on the road, beating Minnesota State 2-1 and tying Concordia-St. Paul, 3-3 in double overtime. The Huskies have had a balanced scoring attack so far, led by two goals each from Maria Kass, Hannah Marion and Brooke Bares. Kate Fearing also has a goal for SCSU.  Abby McDonald leads with two assists. Julia Clifford is 2-2-2 in net this season for St. Cloud State; she has two shutouts. Clifford has recorded 41 saves and has a 2.02 goals allowed average this season.
Gretta Arvesen is in her third season as St. Cloud State's head coach with a record of 17-19-6 at the school.

Two Gamewinners for Greaney

Sophomore forward Annika Greaney shares the team lead with two goal this season — and both have been game winners. Greaney's goal in the 85th minute helped MSUM to take a 2-0 lead on its way to a 2-0 win.  The Sweden native now has three career goals.

Career-High for Reagan
Junior Reagan VonBerge set a career-high with 11 saves with the loss to Northern State. She leads MSUM with 30 saves and picked up her first win against SMSU on Sept. 17.

First Win for Coach
The 2-1 victory over Black Hills State was the first head coaching win for MSUM head coach Christie Chappell, who is in her first season. Chappell is just the third head coach in the program's 21-year history.

Johnson Hits the Net Again
Senior forward Jessica Johnson scored a goal in the 2-1 win over Black Hills State. Johnson's goal tied the game at 1-1 and set up the Dragons to win the game in the final 10 minutes. On Sept. 17 she scored again to help MSUM beat SMSU 2-1.  Johnson now has six career goals.
