MOORHEAD, Minn. – Sophomore
Annika Greaney's goal in the 82nd minute was the gamewinner as the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team topped Black Hills State, 2-1 in nonconference action Saturday in Moorhead, Minn. It was the first head coaching win for MSUM's
Christie Chappell.
MSUM is now 1-1 on the season while Black Hills State fell to 0-2.
The Dragons faced a 1-0 deficit after Black Hills State's Katie Nielsen scored a goal in the 55th minute before rallying with two goals (by senior
Jessica Johnson and Greaney) over the final 16 minutes of play.
"The moment you go a goal down, your team has to make a decision," Chappell said. "Do we fight and believe or do we crumble? My team fought and believed their way back into the game and to get the win. I couldn't be more proud of that."
Facing a 1-0 deficit, MSUM battled back in the second half. Johnson scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute as she sped past the Yellowjacket defense to tie the game at 1-1.
Minutes later, Greaney scored off of an assist from freshman
Rachel Jenson in the 82nd minute to break the tie and give MSUM a 2-1 lead.
The Dragons kept Black Hills State off the scoreboard for the final minutes to preserve the win.
"I'm really excited about our win today," Johnson said. "We played with so much heart and perseverance and I can't wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds," Johnson said. "We've got a special group of players who really care about the program and it was evident on the field today."
Freshman goalkeeper
Kennedy Rodgers picked up the win after playing the final 45 minutes and recording seven saves. Junior
Corina Edgington had three saves in the first half.
Johnson led the Dragons with nine shots, including four on goal. Greaney and sophomore
