MSUM Women Push Win Streak to 15, Down Wildcats 74-64

WAYNE, Neb. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 15 games with a 74-64 win over Wayne State (Neb.) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Wayne, Neb.

MSUM is now 15-1 overall and 12-0 in the NSIC. The Dragons lead the NSIC by two games over Winona State and Sioux Falls, and their win streak is the second-longest in school history. Wayne State fell to 13-4 overall and 8-4 in the league
.
The Dragons shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field compared to 45.7 percent (21-of-46) for the Wildcats. The Dragons had a 33-25 edge in rebounds and had 20 assists compared to nine for the Wildcats.

How It Happened
The Dragon bench came up big again, outscoring Wayne State 26-11, led by freshman forward Megan Hintz with 18 points.
MSUM was up 14-12 with 2:17 left in the first quarter but scored the final five points of the frame – which included a three-point play from Hintz and a basket from sophomore guard Jacky Volkert – to take a 19-12 lead.

That five-point spurt was part of a 9-0 Dragon run that pushed the lead into double digits at 23-12. Wayne State got within 35-27 with 1:19 left in the half but back-to-back three-pointers from junior forward Cassidy Thorson and senior guard Natalie Van Wyhe in the final minute pushed the Dragon lead to 41-27 at halftime.

The Dragons pushed the lead to 16 after a Drew Sannes bucket 12 seconds into the second half. The Wildcats cut the lead to  46-41 but the Dragons scored five straight points – keyed by a three from Thorson – to make it 51-41, and the Dragon lead never dropped below nine the rest of the night.

Impact Performances…
Volkert tied a career-high with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She was 9-of-10 from the foul line and also added four assists and three rebounds.

Hintz scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and also had a career-high eight rebounds.

Thorson had 14 points and two steals while Van Wyhe had eight points, six assists and two steals.

Junior forward Shannon Galegher had eight points and two assists in 15 minutes off the bench.
