MOORHEAD, Minn. — The 15-game winning streak for the No. 15 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team came to an end on Friday as Minnesota Duluth topped the Dragons, 71-59 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM fell to 15-2 overall and 12-1 in the NSIC with the loss; the 15-game win streak was the second-longest in school history. Minnesota Duluth improved to 11-6 overall and 9-4 in the NSIC.
The Dragons remain in first in the NSIC by one game over Sioux Falls and Winona State.
The Dragons shot just 30.9 percent (17-of-55) for the game, compared to 49 percent (25-of-51) for the Bulldogs. UMD had a 36-34 edge in rebounds.
How It Happened…
A slow offensive start proved costly for MSUM. Minnesota Duluth open the game on an 11-0 run over the first 4:27 and the Dragons spent the rest of the night trying to cut into the deficit.
MSUM shot just 24 percent (6-of-25) in the first half while UMD shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30). The Bulldogs led 39-21 at halftime as the Dragons trailed by as many as 22 in the first half.
The Dragons sliced slowly in the deficit but each time they had momentum, the Bulldogs answered with a key basket.
MSUM got as close as 66-57 — the first time the lead had been in single digits since the first quarter — with 45 seconds left as junior forward
Shannon Galegher had a basket. But the Bulldogs went 5-of-6 from the line in the final 44 seconds to secure the win.
The Dragons hit 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) of their free-throw attempts compared to 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) for the Bulldogs.
Impact Performances
Junior guard
Cassidy Thorson had 17 points for MSUM. She added four rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Jacky Volkert had 12 points and four assists, while freshman forward
Megan Hintz had 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting off the bench.
Junior forward
Drew Sannes had nine points, five rebounds and three assists for the Dragons.
Galegher had four rebounds off the bench while sophomore forward
Dierra Diegel had two assists.

Tonight ended the Dragons' three game winning streak over UMD in Moorhead. Prior to tonight's loss, the last time the Bulldogs beat the Dragons in Moorhead was a 65-50 win on Dec. 14, 2013.
