WAYNE, Neb. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team dropped a 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 decision to No. 21 Wayne State in action Saturday in Wayne, Neb.
MSUM is 7-12 overall and 2-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference after the loss while Wayne State is 13-7 overall and 7-4 in the league.
Freshman
Lauren Kiewiet led MSUM with 18 set assists. She also collected four kills and eight digs. Freshman hitter
Sarah Petrbok had eight kills while sophomore hitter
Courtney Selbitschka had six. Freshman outside hitter
Kylie Kanwischer had six kills and a team-high four block assists, while sophomore middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins had five kills and three block assists. Junior libero
Monica Vega led the back-row defense with 17 digs.
Wayne State hit .281 for the match compared to .104 for the Dragons.
MSUM trailed 9-5 in the opening set by a Wayne State attack error brought the Dragons within 12-10. WSC scored seven of the next nine points to push the lead to 19-12 on its way to a 25-18 win.
The Dragons hung tough in the second set and a Selbitschka kill brought them within 18-16. The Wildcats scored the next four points to build a 22-16 lead and prevailed in the set 25-17.
MSUM trailed 5-0 in the third set but battled back and took a 16-14 lead on a service ace by Vega. MSUM's last lead was at 18-17 after a
Tyann Caspers kill, but the Wildcats scored four points in a row to take a 21-18 lead. MSUM was as close as 22-20 after a Kanwischer kill but three straight points helped WSC clinch a 25-20 win.
The Dragons continue action on the road on Oct. 20 at Minnesota Crookston for a 6 p.m. match.
