CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota State Moorhead volleyball team was edged by University of Minnesota Crookston in a close Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match, 27-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-21.
MSUM is now 7-13 overall and 2-10 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles are now 5-15, 2-10 NSIC.
Sophomore middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins led the offense for the Dragons with 14 kills, while
Tyann Caspers had 12 and
Courtney Selbitschka had eight. Selbitschka led the back row defense with 25 digs on the night. Freshman
Ellie Hoyt had 14 digs for the Dragons, while sophomore
Taylor Thorson had 13.
Lauren Kiewiet dished out 24 set assists and Hoyt had 21. Kylie Kanwisher made 10 total blocks, while Kiewiet and Jenkins had five each. Hoyt and Thorson each had a service ace for the Dragons.
The Golden Eagles got off to an early 7-3 lead in the first set. The Dragons kept the score close but UMC led throughout the first set until the score was tied at 20. The teams were back-and-forth until the Golden Eagles ultimately took the first set 27-25.
The score was tied 9-9 in the second set, when the Dragons scored nine out of the next ten points to take a 18-10 lead. MSUM carried that momentum throughout the rest of the set and tied the match with a 25-16 second set win. The third set remained close until UMC led 18-15 and scored seven of the final eight points to take the set 25-16.
The fourth and final set was close until the end when UMC was only leading 22-21. Three back-to-back kills by UMCs' Kassi Green gave the Golden Eagles the 25-21 set victory. Green led Minnesota Crookston with 25 kills on the night.
Tomorrow MSUM will travel to take on Bemidji State University at 2 p.m.
