Dragon Volleyball Set for Three NSIC Matches

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team is now 8-13, 3-10 NSIC after a four match road stretch. Last weekend, the Dragons split a pair of NSIC matches, falling to Minnesota Crookston, 3-1 before sweeping Bemidji State, 3-0. The week, the Dragons will return home to take on No. 4-ranked Minnesota Duluth Friday at 6 p.m. and St. Cloud State Saturday at 5 p.m. before traveling to face No. 9 Northern State Tuesday at 6 p.m. Saturdays game vs. St. Cloud State will be broadcast on WDAY's XTRA.

Scouting the Opposition...
No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth
Minnesota Duluth is 19-2 overall and 12-1 in the NSIC. Last week, the Bulldogs swept both Minot State and U-Mary, 3-0. Sarah Kelly leads the offense for the Bulldogs with 250 kills, averaging 3.62 kills per set. Kelly has an NSIC best hitting percentage of .466. Makenzie Morgen has 234 kills for UMD while Kate Berg has 229. Minnesota Duluth leads the conference in hitting percentage with .334, while its opponents are hitting .170. Setter Emily Torve has racked up 841 set assists averaging 12.37 assists per set. Keena Seiffert has 217 digs for the Bulldogs, while Morgen has 202 and Kelly Madison has 173 digs. The net defense is led by Allison Olley with 69 total blocks, while Abby Thor has 54. UMD is under the direction of head coach Jim Boos who is in his 16th season. Minnesota Duluth leads the all-time series against the Dragons, 61-17.

St. Cloud State University
St. Cloud is 14-9, 6-7 NSIC. Last week, the Huskies went 2-0, defeating U-Mary, 3-2, and Minot State, 3-0. St. Cloud State is hitting .181 this season, compared to .184 for its opponents. Becca Gruber leads the Huskies in kills with 212 averaging 2.62 kills per set. Nicole Miller has 185 kills and Krista Kuglin has 151. Kayla Crane has dished out 464 set assists, while Maddy Torve has 390. Libero Clara Krenz has tallied 484 digs, while Miller has 266 and Taylor Olstad has 200. Marah Mulso leads the net defense with 67 total blocks, while Gruber has 37 and Micah Nier has 33. The Huskies are led by Chad Braegelmann who is in his third season as head coach. St. Cloud State leads the all-time series against the Dragons, 36-22.

No. 9 Northern State University
Northern State is 18-3, 11-2 NSIC. Last week the Wolves defeated Bemidji State, 3-1, and Minnesota Crookston, 3-0.  Earlier this season when the two teams met, Northern State defeated MSUM, 3-0. Hailey Bush lead the Wolves in kills with 219, averaging 4.13 per set. Laura Snyder has recorded 194 kills, while Jenna Reiff is right behind her with 193. Northern State is hitting .294 as a team, compared to its opponents at .170. Ashley Rozell has racked up 892 set assists, averaging 11.81 per set. Libero Jaiden Langlie has 289 digs for the Wolves, while Holly Vancura has 245. Reiff leads in blocks with 80 and Morgan Baufield has 51. Brent Aldridge is in his seventh season as head coach of Northern State. The Dragons lead the all-time series against the Wolves, 47-25.

Vega Keeps Digging

Monica Vega added 21 more digs this past weekend with 13 at Minnesota Crookston and 8 at Bemidji State. Vega is ranked third in the NSIC with a total of 389 digs this season, averaging 5.19 per set. Vega is 37 digs away from reaching the 10th place all-time leader for MSUM at 1,282 digs.

Strong Net Defense
After last weekend, the Dragons currently lead the conference in blocks with a team total of 180.5, averaging 2.38 blocks per set. Freshman Kylie Kanwischer has been consistent at the net this season, including last weekend with 10 total blocks at Minnesota Crookston, her second best this season. The freshman has a total of 83 blocks this season, averaging 1.11 per set. Kanwisher leads the Dragons in blocks and is currently third best in the NSIC. Kaylyn Jenkins has excelled in blocks, including her performance vs. SMSU where she had 11 total blocks. Jenkins has a total of 78 blocks this season, averaging 1.04 blocks per set, ranking sixth in the NSIC.

Dragons to Face Tough Slate This Season
MSUM's 28-game 2017 schedule features seven matches against teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top-25, five of which are in the top-10. The Dragons play No. 1 Concordia - St. Paul, No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State, No. 5 Winona State, No. 7 Minnesota Duluth, No. 10 Augustana, No. 13 Winona State and No. 24 Northern State.

Blake Braces for 23rd Season
Head coach Tammy Blake enters her 23rd season as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball program. Since taking over in Moorhead, Blake has lead MSUM to three NSIC championships and three NCAA appearances. Bob Jones and Madison Halterman are both in their second season as assistant coaches.
