Blocking Helps MSUM Volleyball Upset No. 4 Minnesota Duluth, 3-2

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team upset No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth tonight in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 8-25, 25-20, 15-13).
 
The Dragons improve to 9-13 overall and 4-10 in the NSIC, while the Bulldogs are now 19-3, 12-2 NSIC. The win tonight was MSUM's first win over a ranked team in two years.

Sophomore Kaylyn Jenkins led the team with a 12 kills, seven blocks and two service aces. Lauren Kiewiet and Sarah Hagler each added eight kills for the Dragons. Kiewiet also dished out 19 set assists while freshman setter Ellie Hoyt had 17. Libero Monica Vega led the back row defense with 31 digs, while Taylor Thorson had 14 and Courtney Selbitschka had 10 digs. Kiewiet and Vega also added a service ace each. Kylie Kanwischer led with eight blocks, while Kiewiet had five. The Dragons tallied a total of 17 blocks on the night.
 
The Bulldogs got off to an early 7-3 lead in the first set. Although MSUM was eventually able to tie the set, 21-21, the Bulldogs scored four consecutive points to take the set 25-21.
 
The Dragons regained momentum in set two, pulling out to an early 8-2 lead. The Bulldogs rallied, scoring ten of the next 14 points to tie the game, 12-12. The set was back-and-forth until the Dragons were leading 17-16 and six back to back points extended their lead to 23-16. MSUM won the second set 25-19, tying the match at one a piece.
 
The third set was tied, 3-3, when a Dragon attacking error and five kills gave the Bulldogs the lead, 9-3. UMD would go on to score 16 of the final 21 points to win the third set, 25-8.
 
The fourth set was close until four back-to-back points by the Dragons helped them gain a 16-11 lead. MSUM maintained the lead throughout the rest of the set, winning 25-20, tying the match once again and forcing a fifth set.
 
The fifth set saw eight ties in its entirety. The Dragons would gain a lead and the Bulldogs would continually come back to tie. The Dragons were able to gain a 14-13 lead when a kill by Jenkins would seal the deal for the MSUM at 15-13, winning the match 3-2.
 
The Dragons continue their home stand tomorrow when they host St. Cloud State University at 5 p.m.
