Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team pushed St. Cloud State University to four sets but came up short in the end, 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 12-25, 25-13).
MSUM is now 9-14 overall and 4-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, while St. Cloud State improves to 15-10, 7-8 NSIC.
Kaylyn Jenkins led the offense with 10 kills, while
Lauren Kiewiet and
Courtney Selbitschka each had eight. Kiewiet had 17 set assits for the Dragons and
Ellie Hoyt had ten. Jenkins and Selbitschka tied at the net with six blocks each and freshman
Marley Holt added four. Hoyt had three service aces and
Monica Vega added one.
Monica Vega led the back row defense with 17 kills.
Vega totaled 48 digs this weekend making her the tenth all-time leader in digs with a career total of 1,293 digs.
The Huskies maintained the lead for the most part in the first set but the Dragons keept it close. SCSU only held a 17-15 lead when they scored six consecutive points to increase the lead to 23-15. Kills by Micha Nier and Abby Templin gave the Huskies a 25-17 win in the first set.
The Dragons pulled out to a 7-5 lead in the second set but St. Cloud State would go on to score 13 of the next 16 points to take a 18-10 lead. The Dragons didn't see a lead for the rest of the second set and the Huskies eventually won, 25-18.
MSUM regained momentum in the third set, scoring 14 of the first 16 points. St. Cloud never once saw a lead throughout the set and the Dragons took set three, 25-12 to force a fourth set. The Huskies gained an 8-3 lead early in the fourth. Despite MSUM's efforts to shorten the lead to 9-8, St. Cloud State outscored the Dragons 25-13 in the fourth set to win the match.
The Dragons will travel to take on No. 9 Northern State University Tuesday at 6 p.m.
