Dragon Volleyball Falls to No. 7 Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was edged by No. 7 Northern State University tonight in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, 25-22, 25-23, 25-10.

The Dragons are now 9-15 overall and 4-12 in NSIC play, while the Wolves improve to 21-3, 14-2 NSIC

Sophomore Kaylyn Jenkins led the Dragons in kills for the third straight game with nine. Sophomore Courtney Selbitschka made eight kills and freshman Lauren Kiewiet made five. Kiewiet had 15 set assists while freshman setter Ellie Hoyt had 12. Hoyt also recorded two service aces for MSUM. Kiewiet also played well defensively leading with 12 digs and a block. Taylor Thorson and Selbitschka added seven digs each. Jenkins and freshman Marley Holt each added a block for the Dragons.

The first set was tied at six when three consecutive kills by the Wolves advanced NSU to a 9-6 lead. Although the Dragons were able to keep the score close, Northern State was able to maintain the lead for the remainder for the set, winning 25-22.

Set two was tied early, 3-3, when the Dragons scored six of the next seven points to gain a 9-4 edge over the Wolves. MSUM held on to the lead until the score was 12-8, but Northern State scored the next six points in a row to take a 14-12 lead. The score was back-and-forth until NSU led 23-20, when two kills by Hagler and one by Jenkins tied the set at 23. A kill by the Wolves and a Dragon attacking error gave Northern State a 25-23 second set victory.

NSU got off to an early start in the third set as the scored 13 of the first 16 points of the set to gain a 13-3 lead over MSUM. The Wolves led for the entirety of the third set, winning 25-10.

The Dragons will next travel to face Minnesota State University Mankato, Friday at 6 p.m. and  No. 1 Concordia University, St. Paul, Saturday at 2 p.m.
