MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to Minnesota State University, Mankato tonight, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-12).
The Dragons are now 9-16 overall and 4-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Minnesota State Mankato improved to 13-12, 7-10 NSIC after tonight match.
Freshman Lauren Kiewiet had seven kills, five set assists and three blocks on the night. Sophomores Kaylyn Jenkins and Courtney Selbitschka had six and five kills, respectively. Freshman setter Ellie Hoyt led in assists with 11 and also added ten digs and a service ace. Libero Monica Vega had the most digs for the Dragons with 11, while Selbitschka had nine. Freshman Kylie Kanwischer and Jenkins had two blocks each.
MSUM hit .103 as a team compared to the Mavericks at .328.
The first set was back-and-forth with there never being more than a two point difference. The set was tied 21-21 when an attacking error by the Dragons, three kills and a service ace gave the Mavericks a 25-21 win.
The Dragons started out the second set at a 4-1 deficit but three errors by the Mavericks and two service aces from Selbitschka set MSUM ahead, 6-4. The Mavericks came back to tie the set and the score was close until it remained tied once again, 15-15. The Mavericks scored four consecutive points to pull ahead leaving the Dragons unable to catch up. Minnesota State took set two, 25-19.
The Mavericks got off to an early 4-0 edge over the Dragons in the third set. MSUM was never saw a lead in the set. MSU won the third and final set, 25-12.
Tomorrow the Dragons face No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul at 2 p.m. in its last road game of the regular season.
