MSUM Volleyball Swept by No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team dropped a three-set contest at No. 1-ranked Concordia-St. Paul 25-20, 25-10, 25-13.

MSUM fell to 9-17 overall and 4-14 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action while Concordia-St. Paul improved to 24-2, 17-1 NSIC.

Freshman Lauren Kiewiet led the offense with eight kills, while middle blockers Kylie Kanwiscer and Kaylyn Jenkins had four and three kills, respectively. Freshman setter Ellie Hoyt dished out nine set assists and Kiewiet made seven. Taylor Thorson, Kiewiet and Jenkins each had a service ace for the Dragons. Libero Monica Vega led with eight digs, while Courtney Selbitschka had seven. Kanwisher led the net defense with three blocks, while senior Tyann Caspers had two blocks and Jenkins had one.

MSUM was able to keep up with the Golden Bears throughout the first set. The score was tied 10-10 when a kill by Kiewiet, a service ace by Jenkins and a CSP attacking error set the Dragons ahead 13-10. The Golden Bears were able to come back and the score remained tied again, 15-15. Concordia-St. Paul held the lead for the remainder of the set, eventually winning 25-20.

Two attacking errors by the Golden Bears and kills by Caspers and Kanwischer set the Dragons out to an early 4-1 edge over CSP in the second set. MSUM was able to hold onto the lead until the score was 6-4 and Concordia-St. Paul scored five consecutive points to pull head of the Dragons, 9-6. The Golden Bears carried their momentum to take set two, 25-10. Despite and early 1-1 tie in the third set, CSP held the lead for the entirety of the set, winning 25-13 to complete the sweep.

Next weekend, MSUM will return home to host Winona State, Friday at 6 p.m. and Upper Iowa, Saturday at 4 p.m. in its regular season finale.
