Dragon Volleyball Swept by No. 15 Winona State on Senior Night

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to No. 15-ranked Winona State University on Friday night, 25-9, 25-16, 25-14.
 
MSUM is now 9-18 overall and 4-15 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while WSU improved to 20-7, 14-5 NSIC.

Courtney Selbitschka led the team with six kills while Sarah Hagler made five kills and Tyann Caspers had four. Freshman setter Ellie Hoyt led with 11 assists and Lauren Kiewiet had eight. Hagler, Caspers and Kylie Kanwischer had one block each for the Dragons. Junior libero Monica Vega led the back row defense with 10 digs and also added a service ace. Selbitschka had seven digs and Kiewiet had six.

Winona State scored nine unanswered points to start out the first set. The Dragons were unable to catch up to the Warriors, falling in the first set, 25-9.
 
The Warriors got out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set. The Dragons scored six of the next seven points to tie the set, 7-7. However, the Warriors would go on to score the next eight points to pull ahead to a 15-7 lead. Winona State would go on to take set two, 25-16.
 
The third set was back-and-forth until the Warriors led 5-4, when kills from Caspers and Kiewiet and a bad set by the Warriors set the Dragons ahead, 7-5. The Warriors would go on to score 13 of the next 14 points to help lead them to a 25-14 third set victory.
 
Senior hitter Tyann Caspers was honored prior to the match tonight, as well as student assistant coach, Kevin Bray.
 
MSUM hosts Upper Iowa tomorrow in its final match of the season at 4 p.m.
