The No. 19 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team will open the 2017-18 season at home against a pair of solid NCAA Division II foes. The Dragons will face No. 21 ranked Michigan Tech on Thursday at 7 p.m. and wrap up the weekend on Sunday with a game against Northern Michigan at 4 p.m.

The Dragons will meet Michigan Tech for a fourth time and lead the all-time series 2-1. MSUM will meet Northern Michigan for a third time with the series tied at 1-1. NMU beat the Dragons 49-45 in 2015 at the Highway 75 Classic.
MSUM was 24-5 in 2016-17 and won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular-season title. After losing their season opener, the Dragons rattled off 16 straight wins.
Senior forward
Drew Sannes, the 2016-17 NSIC Player of the Year, led the Dragons in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (8.3) last season. Senior guard
Cassidy Thorson averaged 14.1 points per game and led with 85 three-pointers while junior guard
Jacky Volkert averaged 12.7 points per game. Volkert also led the team in assists (4.8 per game) and was second in total steals (35).
Sophomore forward
Megan Hintz (7.6 ppg) and senior forward
Shannon Galegher (4.3 ppg) return after providing valuable minutes off of the bench. Also returning with playing experience are junior forward

MSUM averaged 69.6 points per game a year ago and shot 43.6 percent from the field. The Dragons allowed 57.4 points per game and outrebounded their foes 38.5-32.3.
Karla Nelson is in her 18th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 302-182.
About Michigan Tech
The No. 21-ranked Huskies are 2-0 on the season, having defeated Davis & Elkins and Ursuline last weekend. They are led by Kelli Guy and Lindsay Winter, who are both averaging 18.0 points per game. Winter also leads the team with 11.5 rebounds per game, while Guy leads the team with 6.0 assists per game. The Huskies are led by head coach Kim Cameron, who is in her eighth season as head coach.
About Northern Michigan
The Wildcats are 1-1 on the season after defeating Indianapolis 59-53 and losing to Lewis 82-59 last weekend. They are led by Darby Youngstrom, who is averaging 14.0 points per game, and Jessica Schultz, who is averaging 13.0 points per game. Schultz also leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game, while Youngstrom leads the team with 2.0 assists per game. They are led by head coach Troy Mattson, who is in his 12th season as head coach.
