TAMPA, Fla. --- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team built a 15-point lead and held off a late rally in a 71-65 win over Anderson University (S.C.) in action Friday in Tampa, Fla.
MSUM is now 2-1 on the season and Anderson, which is receiving votes in the latest WBCA D2 Coaches Poll, fell to 4-1.
Senior forward
Drew Sannes had a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Senior guard
Cassidy Thorson had 14 points and eight rebounds while sophomore forward
Megan Hintz had 10 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard
Lauren Fech led with five assists.
MSUM led 41-28 at halftime, thanks to 15 points and 11 rebounds in the first half for Sannes. The Dragons hit 7-of-14 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
Anderson cut that cap to 41-37 with 8:15 left in the third but MSUM answered with a 10-3 run to push the lead to 53-40. Hintz led the way with five points while Thorson buried a three.
MSUM took a 57-44 lead into the fourth quarter. Anderson cut the lead to 67-65 after an Ace Easter three-pointer with 1:02 left, but senior guard
Jacky Volkert hit 3-of-4 foul shots in the final minute to ice the game for the Dragons.
Freshman guard
Brooklyn Liegel had eight points off the bench for MSUM, while freshman guard
Kiley Borowicz had five points and four assists.
MSUM faces Nyack College at 10 a.m. Central time on Saturday in Tampa, Fla.
