ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team dropped Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest on Friday to No. 13 Northern State University, 95-74. Senior guard Tanner Kretchman became the first player at MSUM to hit 500 career assists.
The Dragons fell to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in NSIC play, while Northern Sate improved to 11-1, 5-0 NSIC.
Junior Addison Park scored season-high 21 points, while sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga scored 20 points and added three assists. In addition to Kretchman's two assists to push him to 500 career assists, he also had 19 points and one steal on the night. Sophomore guard Evan Hines led with six rebounds, while junior guard Travaun Coad added two rebounds, seven points and one steal.
The Dragons shot 51.0 percent from the field (26-of-51) compared to Northern State at 56.5 percent (35-of-62). The Wolves had a 34-20 edge on rebounds.
MSUM led 11-8 at the 14:44 mark of the first half, but the Wolves went on an eight-point run to pull ahead, 16-11. Northern State held the lead for the remainder of the half, however the Dragons only trialed 38-32 going into halftime.
MSUM went on a 10-4 run to begin the second half, coming within two points from NSU, twice. Northern State would score nine points within the next minute to pull away from the Dragons. MSUM didn't get closer than six points for the remainder of the game and Northern would go on to take a 95-74 win over the Dragons.
MSUM will host Northern State on Tuesday with game time set for 8 p.m.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight's loss snapped a three-game winning streak against Northern St. in Aberdeen. Since the beginning of the 2014/2015 season, Northern St. is 38-8 versus all non-Dragon opponents at home, but only 1-3 versus the Dragons.
