BISMARCK, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team picked up its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win of the season with a 5-4 victory over the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday in Bismarck, N.D.
MSUM improved to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC while the Cougars fell to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.
The match was tied at 4-4 as freshman
Chessa Jones battled USF's Marie Schmitz. The match went to third-set super tiebreaker where Jones prevailed 10-8.
"It feels great to get our first conference win," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "Again we played great in singles and the difference was we won one of the doubles. Chessa also came up clutch as her match was the last one out at 4-4."
The Dragons lost two of three doubles but captured a vital win at the No. 2 slot. Freshmen
Olivia Keelin and Alexis Konence defeated USF's Tianna Duda/Abby Seigenthaler, 8-2 to give the Dragons a valuable point.
MSUM won four of the six singles matches. Senior
Jessamy Jones improved to 4-1 on the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kylie Simons.
Keelin picked up the win at No. 2 singles for MSUM with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Duda.
USF won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Senior
Maria Moral Carretero won the No. 5 singles match for MSUM with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Courtney McCans.
MSUM will face Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State on Feb. 24-25 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
