MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team will travel to Orlando, Fla. for their annual spring break trip. The Dragons will play five matches, three of which are against Division II schools, and will also play Moravian College (D3) and Ave Maria (NAIA).
The last time the Dragons took the court, they defeated Minnesota State 5-4 to move them to a 4-3 overall record and a 3-3 conference record. The Dragons trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but picked up to win four of six matches in singles play. The match came down to the No. 1 singles match, where senior
Jessamy Jones won a 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 match. Also picking up wins for the Dragons were senior
Maria Moral Carretero, freshman
Olivia Keelin, and freshman
Alexis Konecne.
The win over Minnesota State was the third straight win for the Dragons, who started the season 1-3. Their three wins have come over Sioux Falls, Southwest Minnesota State, and Minnesota State, all conference opponents.
MSUM swept Southwest Minnesota State on Friday by a 9-0 score.
The Dragons are led in singles play by Jones and Moral Carretero, who both have 6-1 records. Keelin has a 5-1 record in singles play, while
Emma Zamora has a 2-1 singles record. In doubles play, the Dragons are led by Keelin and Konecne, who have a 3-3 record as a team.
Oliver Summers is in his fifth season as MSUM's head coach.
Scouting the Opposition
The Dragons will face five teams in Florida. The first is Ave Maria University, who is 0-4 in NAIA play on the season. The second opponent is Moravian College, who has a 2-1 record on the season. Their third opponent is John Carroll University, who are 2-3 on the season. They will also face Saginaw Valley State, who have a 9-5 record on the season. Their final opponent is the University of the Sciences, who are 11-5 on the season.
Looking Ahead
After the trip, the Dragons will travel to Bismarck, N.D., to face the University of Mary on March 18 before hosting the University of Minnesota-Morris at Courts Plus in Fargo on March 24.
