MOORHEAD, Minn. — Freshman
Tori White threw a five-hit shutout and the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team pounded out 12 hits in a 6-0 win over Nyack College on Sunday evening in Clermont, Fla. MSUM split on the day as the Dragons fell to Northwood, 7-0 to cap off the night.
MSUM is 3-6 in nonconference play this season.
White improved to 2-1 on the year with a five-hit shutout, the first of her collegiate career. She struck out two and walked three.
Sophomore shortstop
Taylor Roddie and freshman outfielder
Madison Paige were each 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Freshman third baseman
Emma Dummer was 2-for-4 with a run scored while sophomore catcher
Savanah Tweet was 2-for-4. Senior second baseman
Jill Fox had a double and an RBI while senior first baseman
Lauren Meeker had a hit and RBI. Senior outfielders
Carly Williamson and
Hannah Klug each were 1-for-4 with a run scored. Eight of the nine Dragons in the lineup recorded hits.
"Tori threw great the first game and we were able to give her some run support early," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said.
A four-run first inning gave MSUM a lead it would never relinquish. Paige hit an RBI double to score Williamson, and Meeker followed with an RBI single to score Roddie. Paige would later score on an error and Meeker would score on an RBI double by Fox to make it 4-0.
MSUM added a run in the sixth when an RBI double by Roddie scored Klug, and added another insurance run on an error in the seventh.
In the loss to Northwood, MSUM managed just one hit, a single by junior catcher
Megan Asham. Roddie and Dummer each reached twice on walks.
"We just couldn't find a way to get anything going offensively," Fehl said.
Freshman
Jordan Hall took the loss for MSUM, going 6 1/3 innings. She struck out four and walked six and allowed seven runs (six earned). Freshman
Becky Volkert pitched the final 2/3 inning of relief.
MSUM will face Pitt-Johnstown (1-1) for a doubleheader beginning today at 5 p.m. in Clermont, Fla.
