MSUM Women's Tennis Opens Florida Trip with 2 Victories

ORLANDO, Fla.—The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team stretched its winning streak to five matches with a pair of nonconference wins on Tuesday. The Dragons beat Ave Marie, 7-2 and topped Moravian College, 8-1.

"This was the best possible start we could have hoped for," MSUM head coach Oliver Summers said. "The team made the adjustments from indoor to outdoor tennis seamlessly which really shows the quality of our players."

The Dragons swept all three doubles matches against Ave Marie, winning by forfeit at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, freshman Olivia Keelin and Alexis Konecne beat Marianna Vargas/Camila Branster, 8-6 while freshmen Maia Wendel and Danielle Unruh teamed up for an 8-1 win over Mary Hardin and Kaylee Kutchta at No. 2.

Ave Marie won at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots. At No. 3 singles, senior Maria Moral Carretero earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hardin, while freshman Chessa Jones won at No. 4 singles, topping Kutchka, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Emma Zamora won at No. 5 singles for MSUM with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Nellie Murphy. The Dragons won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

Against Moravian, MSUM went 2-1 in doubles and swept six singles matches.

Kellin and Konecne picked up their second doubles win of the day with an 8-0 victory over Eiman Nazif/Lauren Steinert at the No. 2 slot. Unruh and Wendel teamed up for an 8-1 win over Grace Bailly and Kate Rennar at No. 3 doubles for the Dragons.

Senior Jessamy Jones won a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win over Brittany Eady at No. 1 singles for the Dragons, while Keelin rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Skylar Oliwa at the second singles lot. Konecne won by injury default at No. 3 singles. Senior Ricquel Ramsbottom beat Steinert, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles while Moral Carretero beat Rennar, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Chessa Jones won at No .6 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Emily Snyder for the Dragons.

MSUM is off until Thursday when it faces Saginaw Valley State and John Carroll.
