MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games on Wednesday, losing to St. Cloud State 1-0 and 4-0 at the MSUM Softball Field.
Both games featured strong pitching, as there was not an extra base hit team by either team.
Freshman designated hitter
Payton Gaber was 2-for-2 in the opener to account for both Dragon hits. She also reached on a walk. Seniors
Jill Fox and
Lauren Meeker also reached on walks.
Freshman pitcher
Jordan Hall had her best outing of the season but suffered the loss. She allowed four hits and one unearned run, striking out one while walking three.
The Dragons brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh. Gaber led off with a single and was pinch-ran for my freshman
Taylor Kelenic. Kelenic moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Savanah Tweet, and moved to third on a groundout. However, a strikeout ended the threat leaving the Dragons one run short.
In the second game MSUM's bats were quieted by SCSU's Kate Kopeck, who struck out 12.
MSUM had three singles in the game — by Fox, sophomore outfielder
Aunica Novacek and by senior third baseman
Kristina Villalobos —but was unable to break through against Kopeck.
Freshman pitcher
Tori White went the distance, striking out two and walking two while giving up four runs, three earned.
Tweet threw out two runners trying to steal on the day.
MSUM will play a doubleheader at Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Dragons' doubleheader with Concordia-Moorhead has been postponed until April 27 as the Cobbers have to make up a conference doubleheader on April 20.
