MSUM Softball Drops 2 to Cougars in Road Twinbill

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept in a doubleheader on Friday, losing 5-2 and 8-0 contests to the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D.

In the opener, freshman third baseman Emma Dummer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for MSUM, while sophomore catcher Savanah Tweet was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Roddie had a hit and a stolen base for MSUM while freshman outfielder Taylor Kelenic scored a run.

Freshman Tori White took the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs in three innings. She allowed 10 hits and walked one, striking out two. Freshman Jordan Hall pitched well in relief, going three scoreless innings.

USF built a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Dragons got two runs back in the fourth. Freshman Payton Gaber reached on an error and was pinch-ran for by Kelenic, who moved to second on a wild pitch.  Meeker singled to move Kelenic to third. Dummer singled to score Kelenic with MSUM's first run. Later in the inning, Tweet hit an RBI double  to score Dummer to make it 5-2.

That was as close as the Dragons could get as they fell by three runs.

In the second game, errors were MSUM's undoing as the Dragons committed seven, leading to seven unearned runs for the Cougars who clinched the game in the bottom of the sixth.

MSUM managed three hits as Roddie, Gaber and Meeker all had base hits.

Freshman Becky Volkert took the loss on the mound, going 3.2 innings. She allowed seven runs but only one was earned. She walked one and struck out one. Hall pitched the final two innings and allowed one unearned run, striking out two.

MSUM was without one of its top hitters on the daywq in freshman outfielder Madison Paige, who was out with an injury. She leads the team in doubles and RBI.

MSUM wraps up the weekend at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. in Marshall, Minn.
