FARGO, N.D. – Thanks to two wins in doubles, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team edged Winona State, 5-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
MSUM is now 12-6 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC, while Winona State fell to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the league. The win gives MSUM a chance at finishing in a tie for second in the NSIC, which the Dragons would do with a win over Upper Iowa on Sunday.
"I was so proud of the team's performance today," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "I was pretty content after we won two of the three doubles and then to go on and win the meet was fantastic. Our whole team has showed tremendous improvement."
At No. 1 doubles, senior
Jessamy Jones and freshman
Chessa Jones picked up an 8-5 win over Justin Daane and Kaisey Skibba of Winona State for a crucial Dragon point. The other doubles point for MSUM came with a victory at No. 3 as junior
Ricquel Ramsbottom and senior
Maria Moral Carretero teamed up for an 8-5 win over the Winona tandem of Tayla Card and Katie Scruggs.
Each team won three singles matches.
Jessamy Jones improved to 12-5 in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Skibba at the No. 1 slot. Freshman
Olivia Keelin improved to 11-3 on the season with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Daane at the No. 2 slot. Moral Carretero improved to a team-best 15-2 in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Card at No. 5.
The Dragons will face Upper Iowa at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Courts Plus.
