FAYETTE, Iowa -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team lost on the road to Upper Iowa University 25-11, 25-22, 25-10.
MSUM is now 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while UIU is 11-2, 2-2 NSIC.
Freshman
Lauren Kiewiet led the offense for the Dragons with seven kills, while sophomores
Kaylyn Jenkins and
Sarah Hagler had five and four kills, respectively. Freshman setter
Ellie Hoyt had 18 set assists and eight digs.
Monica Vega racked up 23 digs and Sarah Petrbock had 13. Freshman middle blocker
Kylie Kanwischer and Jenkins tied in net defense with four blocks, while Kiewiet and
Ellie Rutten each had three.
The Dragons started the first set out with a four point deficit to the Peacocks. Despite three UIU errors and a kill by Jenkins, closing in the lead to only 6-4, the Peacocks took the first set 25-11. The Dragons were able to keep up in the second set with the score either being tied or the two teams trading off leading. The set was pretty even up  until the end when the score was tied, 22-22, an Upper Iowa kill and two errors by Kiewiet gave the Peacocks a 25-22 set win.
MSUM kept up their momentum into the beginning of the third until the Peacocks led 10-8. However, nine consecutive UIU points gave them an 11 point lead and the Dragons were never able to catch up. Upper Iowa won the third and final set 25-10.
The Dragons will cap their road trip off tomorrow at Winona State University at 2 p.m.
