ABERDEEN, S.D. – Missed chances proved costly for the Minnesota State University Moorhead football team on Saturday in a 28-20 loss at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.
MSUM fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC North while Northern State improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC North.
Senior quarterback
Demetrius Carr became MSUM's all-time leader in pass yardage. He entered the game 12 yards away from the record held by
Jake Hodge, and finished the game 28-of-47 for 249 yards passing and a touchdown. Senior receiver
Damon Gibson also tied an MSUM single-game record with 16 catches, tying the mark set by Jabari Taylor.
Senior running back
Austin Stone rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries to lead the ground game. Redshirt freshman receiver
Grady Bresnahan caught seven passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Casey Paskey had seven tackles for MSUM, while junior linebacker
Carter Thiel had five, including 2.5 for loss. Sophomore defensive end
Miles Baggett had a sack and forced a fumble while redshirt freshman defensive lineman Darin Gipson had a sack and forced a fumble.
MSUM trailed 21-20 going into the fourth quarter. With the wind at its back, the Dragons had the advantage in field position and moved inside the Northern 10-yard line two in the final six minutes of the game – and came away with zero points.
"At the end, we had some opportunities to win the game," MSUM head coach
Steve Laqua said. "We didn't take advantage of them. We've got to execute better."
The first march saw them advance to the Northern 1-yard line but Carr was tackled for a five-yard loss on fourth down to end the threat. The second march brought them to the 5-yard line, but a false start pushed the Dragons back five yards. MSUM got to the 6-yard line and attempted a field goal with 1:20 left but it sailed wide left, leaving the Dragons down 21-20.
"We moved the ball pretty well, we struggled to convert in the red zone," Laqua said.
The Wolves faced a fourth down on their own 28-yard line and with the wind in their face elected to go for it. Nicholas Truen broke free for a 72-yard touchdown to make it 27-20, and the extra point pushed the lead to 28-20.
MSUM drove back into Wolves territory late in the final minute but stalled at the 23-yard line.
The Dragons trailed 14-10 at half. Stone scored on a 2-yard run in the second and senior kicker Ruan Albquerque connected on a 30-yard field goal for the Dragons' points.
MSUM took the lead in the third as Bresnahan hauled in a 14-yard scoring pass from Carr, but Northern answered to take a 21-17u lead going into the fourth quarter.
Albuquerque connected on a 39-yard field goal with 10:45 left to bring MSUM within one. Twice the Dragons had the ball inside the Northern 10 and failed to convert.
MSUM hosts Minnesota Duluth for homecoming on Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
"We're going to make sure we keep focused on productive things, the things that are going to help us get better and make plays," Laqua said. "We have to let go of this loss and make sure we get our mind right for next week."
