Bulldogs Rally in Final Minutes, Down Dragon Men, 83-74

DULUTH, Minn. – Despite a 40-38 edge at halftime the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell to University of Minnesota Duluth, 83-74, within the last five minutes of play Friday night in Duluth, Minn. Junior guard Travaun Coad had career-highs of 26 points and 14 rebounds to make it his fifth consecutive double-double.

The Dragons fell to 5-14 overall and 3-10 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, while the Bulldogs improved to 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC.

Coad led the Dragons with his career-highs and fifth straight double-double, while sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga scored 15 points. Senior guard Tanner Kretchman had 11 points, three assists, and two steals. Addison Park added nine points and four rebounds to the Dragons efforts, while junior guard Briton Bussman had nine points off the bench.

MSUM shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field compared to UMD at 51 percent (26-of-51). The Dragons outrebounded Minnesota Duluth 37-27.

UMD led by as many as 12 points at the 8:07 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs' lead wouldn't last as the Dragons outscored them 23-9 for the remainder of the half to lead 40-38 going into halftime.

The Dragons held a five point lead over the Bulldogs as many as four times throughout the second half. Coad had 14 second half points, while Beeninga had eight. MSUM led 70-65 with just over five minutes to play when UMD went on an 18-4 run for the remainder of the game to result in an 83-74 NSIC win over the Dragons.

MSUM will wrap up its road series at St. Cloud State University, Saturday at 6 p.m.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight marked the first loss at Minnesota Duluth since their 60-58 loss on Dec. 13, 2014. That was the first loss of the 2014/2015 season after a 12-0 getaway, and was only one of two road losses (Augustana) in the Dragons' record breaking 35-4 season that saw them win the Region and advance to the Elite Eight.
