MOORHEAD, Minn. – Junior guard
Travaun Coad recorded his second straight double-double tonight but it wasn't enough as the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team came up short against University of Mary, 77-65.
MSUM fell to 4-12 overall, 2-8 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action while UMary improved to 3-11, 1-9 NSIC.
Coad led with 18 points and 11 rebounds to record his second straight double-double, while
Addison Park had 16 points and three rebounds. Sophomore guard
Johnny Beeninga had 15 points, six rebound and one assist. Senior guard
Tanner Kretchman led with three assists, while Coad and
Briton Bussman had two each.
Jake Johnson had six points and two rebounds off the bench.
The Dragons shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) compared to the Marauders shot 50 percent (28-of-56). MSUM outrebounded UMary 35-30.
The beginning of the game was close as the score was tied, 12-12 with just under 13 minutes to play. MSUM went on a 9-4 run to take a five-point lead over the Marauders. The Dragons held a three-point lead with 4:21 to play in the first half when Mary went on a 10-2 run to hold a 34-29 edge going into halftime.
MSUM outscored UMary 17-10 within the first six minutes of the second half to tie the game, 46-46. The Marauders held the lead for the remainder of the game to take the 77-65 victory over the Dragons.
The entirety of tonight's game saw eight lead changes and five ties.
MSUM with conclude its four-game homestand next weekend when it hosts Augustana University, Friday at 8 p.m., and Wayne State College, Saturday at 6 p.m.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Including last night's loss to Minot State, this marks the first time that the Dragons have been swept at home over a weekend since falling 75-61 to Augustana on Feb. 24, 2012, then losing 64-50 the following night against Wayne State.
