MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team hosted Augustana University (S.D.) on Friday and fell short by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18.
MSUM is now 9-11 overall and 5-8 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. Augustana improves to 8-13 overall and 3-10 in the NSIC.
Freshman outside hitter
Amanda Carlson led the Dragons offensively with 14 kills, and sophomore middle blocker
Kylie Kanwischer followed with nine kills. Kanwischer also contributed six blocks as the Dragons out-blocked the Vikings 10 to 4. Sophomore setter
Lauren Kiewiet dished out 22 assists and redshirt freshman
Becca Koehn had 16 on the night. Senior libero
Monica Vega led all players with 24 digs, while Koehn contributed 14.
In the first set, the Dragons pulled within two thanks to a kill from Carlson to make the score 11-9. The Vikings pulled away late in the set to reach set point. Kiewiet contributed back-to-back kills to save the set before the Vikings were able to claim a 25-22 opening set.
In the second set, the Vikings pulled ahead early before the Dragons put together a run. Kills from Kanwischer and Carlson pulled the Dragons within one at 9-8. A block from freshman right side hitter

Kaylyn Jenkins gave MSUM at 14-13 lead. MSUM scored nine of the last 11 points to take set two 25-22. The Dragons had four blocks down the stretch—including a set point block from Kiewiet and Jenkins.
In set three, the Dragons saw an 11-6 lead early off a Jenkins kill. The Vikings fought back with five-straight points to take a 17-15 lead. A kill from Kiewiet brought the Dragons within two at 20-18, but the Vikings closed out the third set with a 25-18 victory.
The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth set and went up 7-1 out of the gate. MSUM reclaimed the lead at 9-8 thanks to a kill from Carlson. Augustana went on a late run to give themselves set point. Despite a late fight from the Dragons, they closed out the match with a 25-18 win.
MSUM is back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. when they take on Wayne State College.
