MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team dropped a 25-18, 25-20, 25-12 decision to Wayne State in action on Saturday at home.
MSUM is now 9-12 overall and 5-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. Wayne State improves to 17-6 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC.
Freshman outside hitter
Amanda Carlson carried much of the offensive burden and put away seven kills. Junior middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins matched Carlson's seven kills and contributed three blocks. Sophomore setter
Lauren Kiewiet provided her offense with 16 assists to go along with 12 digs. Five Dragons recorded double-digit digs with Carlson's 15 leading the charge. Senior libero
Monica Vega followed closely with 13 digs.
The Wildcats hit .192 compared to .054 from the Dragons.
The first set featured an early MSUM lead at 10-7. The Dragons had three blocks throughout the first 10 points. The Wildcats answered back with six-straight points, and continued to pressure the Dragons to take a 15-11 lead. Wayne State would not let up and claimed the opening set 25-18.
The Dragons came out swinging in set two and took a 14-10 lead off a kill from sophomore middle blocker
Kylie Kanwischer. MSUM pushed their lead to 17-11 before the Wildcats responded with a five-point run. Wayne State scored nine of the last ten points to take a 25-20 second set.
In the third set, the Wildcats proved why they are a top dog in the NSIC by going up 19-2 on the Dragons. The Dragons showed some fight late but were unable to dig themselves out of the hole as Wayne State took a 25-12 set three victory.
The Dragons continue action against Southwest Minnesota State on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.
