MSUM Volleyball Falls to No. 16 SMSU in Three

MARSHALL, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to No. 16 Southwest Minnesota State University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, 25-19, 25-11, 25-17.

MSUM falls to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in the NSIC, while SMSU improves to 16-7 overall and 11-4 in the NSIC.

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Carlson led the offense with 11 kills, while junior middle blocker Kaylyn Jenkins contributed seven. Sophomore setter Lauren Kiewiet dished out 21 assists. Senior libero Monica Vega led all players with 21 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Kylie Kanwischer had three blocks on the night.

The first set was a battle from the start, and a kill from Carlson tied the score 4-4 early. The Mustangs went on a late run to go up 23-13. The Dragons would not go down quietly and scored three-consecutive points off kills from Kiewiet, Carlson, and freshman Madison Wassink. Despite the late push from MSUM, the Mustangs closed out the first set 25-19. Vega had an impressive 10 digs in the first set.

In set two, a Jenkins service ace gave the Dragons a 4-3 edge. SMSU responded and went on a six-point run to earn a commanding lead. Another late run gave the Mustangs set point, and they closed out set two 25-11. SMSU outhit the Dragons .457 to -.032 in the set.

Southwest jumped out to an early lead in the third set before a block from Carlson and Kiewiet slowed them down. A kill from Carlson cut the Mustang lead to 17-10, but SMSU would continue to dominate and closed out the match with a 25-17 victory.

The Dragons will take on the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) tomorrow at 2 p.m.
