The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team hosted No. 8 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and fell 25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 25-11.
The Dragons fall to 9-16 overall and 5-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Bulldogs improve to 22-5 overall and 15-3 in the NSIC.
Junior middle blocker Kaylyn Jenkins led the team with 10 kills and contributed four blocks on the night. Redshirt freshman setter Becca Koehn dished out 18 assists, and sophomore Lauren Kiewiet had 16 assists. Defensively, senior libero Monica Vega led the team with 12 digs, while freshman outside hitter Amanda Carlson provided 10 digs.
UMD jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set to force an MSUM timeout. The Dragons had a five-point scoring run to pull within two at 14-12. The run featured a kill and block from Jenkins. The Bulldogs scored nine of the final 12 points to claim a 25-16 first set.
In set two, the teams battled back and forth with neither side able to string together points. The Dragons tied the set 13-13 off a kill from freshman Madison Wassink. MSUM claimed a 18-17 lead off kills from Kiewiet, Carlson, and sophomore Kylie Kanwischer to force a UMD timeout. The Dragons scored four consecutive points to take the second set 25-20.
Minnesota Duluth came back with renewed energy in the third set to take an 11-2 lead. MSUM could not gain momentum and fell 25-11 in the third set. The Bulldogs outhit the Dragons .333 to -.034 in the set. The fourth set featured another early Bulldog lead at 13-6. UMD scored eight of the final nine points to claim a 25-11 fourth set victory. UMD hit .480 in the fourth set.
MSUM wraps up the regular season next week on the road as they take on Bemidji State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 2 p.m.
