MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball hosted the No. 2 Northern State University Wolves on Tuesday and fell short by scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-17. This was the second meeting between the teams in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action this season.
MSUM is now 9-10 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC while the Wolves improve to 19-1 overall and 11-1 in the league.
Sophomore
Lauren Kiewiet led the team with seven kills while dishing out 15 assists. Junior middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins and freshman outside hitter
Madison Wassink each put away six kills. Junior defensive specialist
Taylor Thorson led the team defensively with 11 digs, while senior libero
Monica Vega provided eight. Jenkins had four blocks on the night, and Selensky recorded three.
In the first set, the teams battled early with back-and-forth play. A kill from freshman outside hitter
Amanda Carlson brought the Dragons within three at 12-9. The Wolves took back the momentum with seven consecutive points to take a 19-9 lead. MSUM made a late run, but it was not enough as NSU took the first set 25-15.
The second set began much like the first, and the Dragons took a 6-4 lead off a block from Kiewiet and sophomore middle blocker
Kylie Kanwischer. Northern retook the lead, but the Dragons rattled off five consecutive points for a 16-15 lead. The Wolves would not roll-over and scored 10 of the final 11 points for a 25-17 victory.
Another evenly-matched start in the third set saw the Dragons pull within one at 9-8 off a kill from Kanwischer. MSUM was right on NSU's heels, and a kill from Selensky brought the Dragons within one—yet again--at 14-13. A late run brought the Wolves to match point as they closed out the night with a 25-17 set three victory.
MSUM will host Augustana on Friday at 6 p.m.
