MOORHEAD, Minn. — Freshman guard
Gavin Baumgartner scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team to a 90-66 win over crosstown foe Concordia College in non conference action Tuesday at Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead.
MSUM is now 3-0 on the season, all three wins coming by more than 20 points.
Baumgartner finished 9-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from three-point range while also adding five rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard
Bryce Irsfeld added 22 points and seven assists while senior guard
Travaun Coad added 18 points. Junior guard
Johnny Beeninga had 10 points while freshman post
Jesse Bergh had a team-best six rebounds.
MSUM shot 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the field, including 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three-point range. MSUM had a 33-27 edge in rebounds.
Thanks to some torrid three-pointer shooting early, MSUM opened the game on a 17-4 run in the first 4:03. Baumgartner hit three 3s while Irsfeld and senior forward
Addison Park also buried threes. The Cobbers answered with a run of their own, 11-0, to cut the lead to 17-15.
Concordia was within five at 29-24 with 8:34 left in the half but the Dragons outscored the Cobbers 23-12 the rest of the way to take a 52-36 lead into half. Baumgartner, Irsfeld and Coad combined for 39 first-half points. MSUM pushed the lead to as much as 27 points on its way to the win, which is the Dragons' seventh straight over the Cobbers.
MSUM heads to Vancouver, B.C., to compete in the Simon Fraser Classic. MSUM opens against Western Washington on Friday at 7 p.m., Central time.
