MSUM Men's Basketball Falls to No. 14 Western Washington, 80-76

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team dropped an 80-76 nonconference game to No. 14 Western Washington in the Simon Fraser Classic opener in Vancouver, B.C.

MSUM falls to 3-1 on the year while Western Washington improves to 2-1.

Senior guard Travaun Coad led the team with a season-high 23 points and four assists. Coad also recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Senior forward Addison Park contributed 21 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Johnny Beeninga recorded a career-high five steals to go along with 12 points.

MSUM hit 9-of-20 (45.0 percent) attempts from the three-point line while Western Washington was 9-of-25 (36.0 percent). The Dragons shot 43.7 percent (31-of-71) from the field while the Vikings held the advantage by shooting 46.4 percent (32-of-69).

The Dragons held a 10-8 lead through the first five minutes in part to five points from Park. The teams traded points through much of the first half and claimed a 29-28 lead with 7:23 remaining as Coad buried a three.

With 2:19 remaining in the first half, a layup from Park pulled the Dragons within two at 38-36. MSUM had opportunities late but could not capitalize and trailed 42-38 going into the break.

Freshman guard Gavin Baumgartner delivered with a dunk to pull his team within four at 68-64 with 5:48 left in the game. Baumgartner hit a three with :58 remaining to cut the Vikings lead to three at 77-74. The final seconds featured late attempts by the Dragons, but they were unable to take the lead and fell 80-76.

MSUM had 25 points off the bench.

The Dragons will face Simon Fraser University (B.C.) on Saturday at 9 p.m. in Vancouver, B.C.
