CROOKSTON, Minn. — Junior forwards
Megan Hintz and
Madi Green combined for 35 points and 24 rebounds to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team to a 76-60 win over Minnesota Crookston in action Friday night in Crookston, Minn.
MSUM, which has won four in a row, is now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while UMC fell to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Hintz finished with 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for the Dragons while Green finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Kiley Borowicz had 16 points and seven rebounds while senior guard
Jacky Volkert had 12 points.
UMC was within 15-12 with 1:39 left in the first quarter before MSUM went on a 10-0 run, which continued into the second quarter, to push the lead to 25-12. Green had five points during that run while Borowicz drained a three. Green had 11 points in the second quarter alone as MSUM took a 41-30 lead into halftime.
It was 60-50 in the fourth quarter before Borowicz hit two free throws and Volkert added a basket to make it 64-50 and MSUM's lead never dropped below 10 at that point.
The Dragons had a commanding 49-30 edge in rebounds, including 18-4 on the offensive glass. That led to a 21-4 edge in second-chance points. The Dragons also committed a season-low six turnovers.
Sophomore guard
Lauren Fech had three assists for MSUM.
MSUM plays at Bemidji State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Dragons' home opener is Dec. 14 vs. U-Mary.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons won their first two NSIC games on the road last year to begin conference play (U-Mary and Minot State) as well as this year with tonight's win (Northern State and UM Crookston), marking the first time that the Dragons have won their first two NSIC games when played on the road in back-to-back seasons, since winning at Bemidji State and at UM Duluth in December 2009, then again at BSU and UMD in December 2010.
