FARGO, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team recorded wins in five of the six singles matches in a 7-2 win over St. Cloud State in action Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
MSUM is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while St. Cloud State fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
"This was a great start to the conference season," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "Our performance today really shows the depth in our lineup, from top to bottom. We continue to improve and it was nice to be tested at times by St. Cloud."
The Dragons opened with two wins in the three doubles matches. St. Cloud State won at No. 1 doubles but at NO. 2 doubles, freshman Swenne Albert and sophomore Alexis Konecne earned an 8-2 win over St. Cloud State's Abby Scheck and Emma Hanegraf to get MSUM on the board. MSUM also won at No. 3 doubles as senior Ricquel Ramsbottom and sophomore Emma Zamora prevailed 8-5 over Sommer Kopff and Samantha Fitzpatrick.
In singles, freshman Julia Geske prevailed at No. 1 for MSUM, topping Fernanda Quintino dos Santos 6-4, 6-2 for her second straight win. Albert beat Ann Marie White 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles while sophomore Alyssa Wolf beat Melissa Nierenhausen at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Ramsbottom improved to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fitzpatrick at No. 5 singles while Konecne also improved to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Hanegraf.
MSUM hosts Minnesota Duluth at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Courts Plus.
