BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell to Bemidji State University, 80-73, Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in Bemidji, Minn. at BSU Gymnasium.
The Dragons fell to 6-19 overall and 4-15 in NSIC play, while the Beavers improved to 11-13, 8-11 NSIC.
Senior guard Tanner Kretchman led MSUM with season highs of 27 points and seven rebounds. Kretchman also added three assists and three steals on the night. Junior forward Addison Park had 15 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga had ten points and an assist. Travaun Coad led the Dragons with nine rebounds and also added seven points and two assists. Briton Bussman recorded seven points, three rebounds and two assists for MSUM.
MSUM shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) from the field compared to Bemidji State at 47.7 percent (31-of-65). The Beavers also held a 42-35 edge in rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start, with no shots being made within the first two minutes. However, the Beavers pulled ahead first, gaining a 21-10 lead over the next six minutes. The Dragons would answer with a 13-0 run, capped off with a three from Beeninga to give MSUM its first lead of the half. Bemidji State game back to tie the game, 36-36, with under a minute to play, but a layup by Coad set the Dragons ahead 38-36 going into halftime.
The Dragons maintained its lead for the first ten minutes of the second half, leading by as many as six. The Beavers would go on a 9-0 run to regain the lead. Bemidji State would carry the lead throughout the remainder of the game, taking an 80-73 win to complete its season sweep over the Dragons.
Tanner Kretchman scored 20 of the Dragons' 35 points in the second half.
MSUM will play at Minnesota Crookston Saturday at 6 p.m. in its final road game of the regular season.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight's loss marks the first time Bemidji St. has swept the season series versus the Dragons since posting a 74-62 win in Bemidji on Jan. 13, 2004 and a 77-57 victory in Moorhead exactly one month later. Bemidji St. would also register a home 75-62 win in the NSIC quarterfinals to end the Dragons season.
