FARGO, N.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team opened the 2018 season with a 9-0 nonconference win over Concordia College on Friday night at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
MSUM is 1-0 on the season while Concordia fell to 1-2.
"This was an ideal start to our season," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "All of our doubles teams started a little slow and dealt with some first-match jitters but they came through superbly. Then we had six singles displays so all in all it was a great day."
The Dragons lost just eight games as they swept the doubles competition. Freshman Julia Geske and sophomore Olivia Keelin earned an 8-2 win over Jenna Forknell and Maia Wendel at No. 1 doubles for MSUM. Freshman Swenne Albert and sophomore Alexis Konecne beat Lisa Neumann and Kendra Stoick 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while MSUM's tandem of senior Ricquel Ramsbottom and sophomore Emma Zamora defeated Lexi Johnson and Josie Beachy 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
MSUM swept the singles play without losing a set. The Dragons surrendered just 11 games in the six matches.
Geeks beat Forknell, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while Keelin beat Stoick 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Albert beat Wendel, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Alyssa Wolf dominated Neumann 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Ramsbottom picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Beachy at No. 5 singles with Konecne cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Johnson.
MSUM opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday against St. Cloud State. The match begins at 2 p.m. at Courts Plus.
