BEMIDJI, Minn. – Senior
Drew Sannes had a double-double to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team to a 76-61 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday in Bemidji, Minn. With the win, and Augustana's 64-59 overtime loss to Sioux Falls, the Dragons are now tied for the Vikings for first in the NSIC.
MSUM is now 20-3 overall and 17-2 in the league with its 14
th straight win. Bemidji State fell to 4-19 overall and 3-16 in the NSIC. The Dragons claimed the Century Trophy for a second straight year; the trophy goes to the winner of the second meeting of the year between the two teams.
Sannes had 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Dragons in both categories. Junior guard
Jacky Volkert had 22 points and four assists. Sophomore forward
Megan Hintz had eight points and eight rebounds while senior guard
Cassidy Thorson shared the team lead with Volkert with four assists.
The Dragons never trailed, and a big first quarter vaulted them into a 22-9 lead. Sannes had seven first-quarter points while Volkert and senior forward
Shannon Galegher had four each.
MSUM led 40-26 at halftime with Sannes accounting for 14 points. The Dragons shots 51.5 percent (17-of-33) while holding the Beavers to 36 percent (9-of-25) in the first half.
The Dragons maintained the lead throughout and led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter.
MSUM shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) for the game compared to 40 percent (24-of-60) for the Beavers. MSUM had a 45-27 edge in rebounds.
Galegher had seven points and four assists for MSUM.
The Dragons play at Minnesota Crookston at 4 p.m. on Saturday in their final road game of the regular season.
