Dragon Softball Splits on Day 1 of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team split two games to open the PFX Spring Games in Florida. MSUM edged Felician College, 5-4 to open the day before falling to Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.), 4-2.

MSUM is 2-8 on the nonconference season.

In the win over Felician, freshman pitcher Becky Berth was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while sophomore outfielder Madison Paige was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior shortstop Taylor Roddie was 1-for-3 with an RBI while freshman first baseman Ashley McCance was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Berth picked up the win on the mound for MSUM, going the distance and allowing four earned runs. She struck out six.

A three-run fifth inning helped MSUM rally. Roddie, Gaber and Paige all had RBI in the inning.

"That was a great team win," MSUM head coach Kelsey Fehl said. "Becky threw a great game. We had solid defense and we were able to string enough hits together to produce runs."

Against Trevecca Nazarene, junior second baseman Lexie Kennedy was 2-for-3 with a double. Roddie was 1-for-2 with a walk while sophomore shortstop Emma Dummer was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Sophomore pitcher Payton Gaber was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior outfielder Aunica Novacek and freshman outfielder Elizabeth Johnson added hits for MSUM.

Gaber allowed four runs in four innings, but only one was earned. The struck out three and walked two. Novacek pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Five Dragon errors led to three unearned runs

"Payton and Aunica did a great job pitching, but we didn't play good defense behind them," Fehl said. We have to clean it up defensively and bounce back on Tuesday."

MSUM resumes on Tuesday. The Dragons will face Notre Dame College at 1 p.m. Central time and Notre Dame (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m. CT
