Nishihara's Game Winner in OT Lifts Dragon Women's Soccer Past Minot State, 3-2

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Tomomi Nishihara scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds left in overtime to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team earn a thrilling 3-2 win over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM, which beat Minot State for the first time ever in women's soccer, improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC while Minot State fell to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Beavers were picked to finish in fourth in the NSIC preseason coaches poll.

Time was running out in the first overtime when sophomore Carly Jo Gamrath passed a crosser to Nishihara who put the ball past the Minot State goalkeeper to give the Dragons the one-goal win. It was Nishihara's first goal of the season and Gamrath's first assist.

"It was an unbelievable win and effort from our team today," MSUM head coach Christie Kopietz said. "We have put a ton of effort and not always got the win in overtime so that just felt like pure joy. I'm so proud."

Freshman Kaleigh Sedlacek made a couple of spectacular saves and finished with 11 in the victory to pick up her first collegiate win.

The winning goal capped off a comeback for MSUM, which trailed 2-1 with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. The game-tying goal came at the 80:28 mark as senior forward Jessica Dallman scored off of a rebound to tie the game at 2-2.

MSUM took a 1-0 lead in the first half when freshman Jennifer Barnes scored off of a rebound to give the Dragons the lead. The Beavers tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 34:38 mark of the first half.

The game stayed that way until Minot's Haley Berryman scored at the 57:40 mark to put the Beavers up. The Dragons didn't back down, however, and battled back for the tie.

The Dragons will host UMary at 1 p.m. on Sunday to wrap up the weekend.
