No. 9 Bulldogs Down MSUM Volleyball in 4 Sets

DULUTH, Minn. —  The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to the No. 9 University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday in Duluth, Minn., by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 27-25, 25-12.

The Dragons are now 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Bulldogs improve to 10-4 overall and 5-1 NSIC.

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Carlson had nine kills, followed closely by freshman outside hitter Lexi Gilbertson with eight, and both middle blockers Kylie Kanwischer and Kaylyn Jenkins who provided six apiece. Sophomore setter Lauren Kiewiet had 18 assists and freshman setter Katelyn Selensky had 12. Three Dragons had five blocks on the night: Selensky, Jenkins, and Kanwischer. Senior libero Monica Vega led the team with 24 digs, while Kiewiet captured a double-double with 13 digs.

In the first set the teams traded points early, and the Dragons captured a 7-5 lead off an error from the Bulldogs. UMD broke away on a 10-point scoring run to take a 19-9 lead. The deficit would be too much for the Dragons as they fell 25-15.

The second set featured an early run from UMD to give themselves at 9-3 lead. MSUM went on a four-point run to force a UMD timeout. The run featured an ace from Carlson and a kill from Gilbertson. The Bulldogs sat at a 24-17 set point, but the Dragons would not go down without a fight. MSUM score five straight before UMD could seal the deal at 25-22.

The Dragons would carry their set two momentum into the third set and jumped out to an 8-4 lead featuring two blocks from Jenkins and Selensky. UMD regained the lead at 20-19, forcing an MSUM timeout. A block right out of the timeout from Kiewiet and Kanwischer tied things up 20-20. Back-and-forth play set up another tie at 25-25 before two UMD errors gave MSUM a 27-25 victory.

In the fourth set UMD came out firing on all cylinders and went up 12-4. The Dragons could not string together points and hit just .033 in the set as the Bulldogs went on to take the fourth set 25.12.

The Dragons are back in action tomorrow at St. Cloud State at 2 p.m.
