ST. CLOUD, Minn. — A huge night blocking at the net helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team earn a 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 27-25 win over St. Cloud State in action Saturday in St. Cloud, Minn.
MSUM is now 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the win while St. Cloud State fell to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the league.
MSUM finished with 17 team blocks while St. Cloud State had seven. Several Dragons keyed the play at the net as junior middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins led the way with nine block assists. Sophomore middle blocker
Kylie Kanwischer had seven while freshman hitter
Amanda Carlson and freshman setter
Katelyn Selensky had five each. Sophomore right-side hitter/setter
Lauren Kiewiet added five block assists.
Carlson led the hitting attack with 19 kills, while Jenkins and freshman
Madison Wassink had seven each. Kiewiet had 26 assists while Selensky had 15. Senior libero
Monica Vega had a season-high 37 digs while Kiewiet had 16, Selensky 13 and sophomore defensive specialist
Taylor Thorson had 12.
All four sets were close, with the closest margin of victory being three points. SCSU won the first set 25-22 but the Dragons pulled out the win in the second set. That set was tied at 23-23 before Carlson and Jenkins teamed up for a block to put MSUM up 24-23 and Kanwischer finished off the set with a kill to give the Dragons the win.
The third set followed a similar pattern as MSUM was tied at 24-24. Carlson's kill made it 25-24 and Kiewiet and Kanwischer teamed up for a block to finish off a 26-24 Dragon win.
The fourth set was tied at 25-25 before Vega recorded a kill. A SCSU error finished off a 27-25 win.
MSUM returns home to face Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. on Friday.
