WINONA, Minn. — A big fourth-quarter surge helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team stretch its winning streak to nine as the Dragons prevailed 64-51 over Winona State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Winona, Minn.
MSUM is now 11-2 overall and 7-0 in the NSIC; as a result of Augustana's 74-71 loss to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, MSUM is now alone in first place in the NSIC. The Warriors fell to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the NSIC.
The Dragons outscored Winona State 20-6 in the final quarter, which turned a one-point deficit into a 13-point win.
Junior forward
Megan Hintz picked up her 11th career double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. She was 10-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range. Senior guard
Jacky Volkert added 11 points and nine assists. Sophomore guard
Kiley Borowicz added nine points.
The big fourth quarter was keyed by Volkert (nine points) and Hintz (seven points) and a stifling effort on the defensive end by MSUM. The game was tied at 48-48 with 8:42 left but the Dragon defense held the Warriors to three points over rest of the contest to secure the win.
The Dragons led by four at halftime but were outscored 19-14 in the third quarter.

Peyton Boom finished with six points and seven rebounds off the bench while sophomore guard
Brooklyn Liegel had five points and three assists.
MSUM faces Upper Iowa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight was the seventh straight win for the Dragons when playing their first game of a new year. Their last such loss was a 64-58 home loss to Minnesota State Mankato on Jan. 2, 2012.
