MSUM Men's Basketball Triumphant in a 99-95 Overtime Contest Against UIU

FAYETTE, Iowa – A season-high 24 points from junior guard Johnny Beeninga led the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team to a 99-95 overtime victory over Upper Iowa in Saturday night Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.

MSUM improves to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the NSIC while UIU drops to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC.

Beeninga's 24 points led the team, and the Dragons had six players score in double-digits. Senior forward Addison Park contributed 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Gavin Baumgartner had 15 points, while freshman guards Siman Sem and Bryce Irsfeld each had 14 points. Senior guard Travaun Coad had 13 points and led the team with five assists.

MSUM shot 51.3 percent (40-of-78) from the field compared to 41.1 percent (30-of-73) from UIU. The Dragons held a 45-34 edge in rebounds.

The Dragons claimed a 17-16 lead at the 12:43 mark in the first half off a Baumgartner three-pointer. The Peacocks fought back, and the teams traded points in the final few minutes of the half, but a layup from Beeninga gave MSUM a 45-42 lead going into halftime.

The Dragons went up 61-51 at the 15:16 mark in the second half off a jumper from Park. Upper Iowa went on a 14-point run to go up 65-61 with 9:24 on the clock. A three pointer from Irsfeld brought the Dragons within one with 4:41 remaining, but the Peacocks responded to go up 81-80 with just over three minutes to go. A clutch three-pointer from Irsfeld with :04 remaining brought the score to 87-87 and forced the Dragon's first overtime contest of the year.

MSUM scored first in overtime thanks to a three-pointer from Beeninga, but UIU countered to even the score at 90-90. A jumper and free-throw from Park gave the Dragons a 96-94 edge with :42 on the clock, and three made free-throws down the stretch gave MSUM all they would need to earn a 99-95 road victory.

MSUM is back in Nemzek Fieldhouse next week as they face Bemidji State on Friday Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
