MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team made a one-goal lead stand in a 1-0 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday in Moorhead, Minn.
Dragon seniors Maren Soupir, Kennedy Rodgers and Lindsey Brownell.
MSUM is now 5-6-4 overall and 3-6-3 in the NSIC while Bemidji State fell to 10-5-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the league.
It was the first win in women's soccer for MSUM over Bemidji State since 2008; the Beavers had won nine of the last 10 meetings, while the other resulted in a tie in 2011. The Dragons honored their three seniors, defender
Lindsey Brownell, goalkeeper
Kennedy Rodgers and midfielder
Maren Soupir, prior to the game.
"What a great way to honor our seniors," MSUM head coach
Christie Kopietz said. "I'm so happy with the performance."
The win also keeps the Dragons' hopes for reaching the conference tournament alive; the top eight teams in the league qualify, and MSUM is trailing Winona State and Southwest Minnesota State by six points with three games remaining. A win in the NSIC is worth three points while a tie is worth one.
Junior defender
Lauren Phillips scored her first career goal on a header from a free kick from sophomore
Cameryn Brill at the 34:13 mark of the first half to make it 1-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kayleigh Sedlacek had seven saves in net to pick up her fifth shutout of the 2019 season for MSUM.
MSU plays at winless Minnesota Crookston Sunday in a battle for the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock. The game is at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Crookston, Minn.
