MSUM Women's Soccer Retains Rivalry Rock with 2-1 Win Over Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team retained the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock with a 2-1 win at Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday in Crookston, Minn.

MSUM recorded an NSIC weekend sweep -- earning six points for two wins -- for the first time in the tenure of Dragon head coach Christie Kopietz and since the league switched to the current schedule and scoring format.  The last time the Dragons beat Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State in the same week was 2003.

The Dragons are now 6-6-4 overall and 4-6-3 in the NSIC while UMC fell to 0-14 overall and 0-13 in the league.

"We're very happy to be come back home to Moorhead with the Rivalry Rock," Kopietz said.

The six wins are the most in a season for MSUM since the Dragons won eight games in 2011. The Dragons also kept their NSIC tournament hopes alive; they trail eighth-place Wayne State by five points with two games remaining. A win in the NSIC is worth three points.

Senior defender Lindsey Brownell got the Dragons on the board with a goal just 3:27 into the game. She was assisted by junior midfielder Jensen Odegaard.  Sophomore defendre Kaylee Parsons added a key second goal for MSUM, finding the back of the net at the 63:52 mark.

The Dragons needed that second goal as UMC scored a goal with less than five minutes left to cut the lead to 2-1. MSUM made the one-goal lead stand in picking up its second straight win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kayleigh Sedlacek had one save and didn't allow a goal in 66:16 of action. Senior goalkeeper Kennedy Rodgers had a save as well.

MSUM plays host to St. Cloud State at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. That game was rescheduled from early October as a result of the snowstorm that hit the region.
